Selling Your Product Online?
We get asked this question almost everyday now. Someone has a product that is sold in a store or through referrals, maybe started a page or an instagram account to publicize for it, but they want to take it to the next level and have proper eCommerce.
It all started a few years ago, when I overlooked the implementation of a huge ERP system being implemented in the company I proudly belonged to for 9 years of my life. It was a mega eCommerce ERP system to get the company to start competing in this landscape, adapting to the global move and supporting the retails on ground. It was massive and the amount of details and learning was unlimited.
Once we launched, I got the appetite, so I started my own eCommerce startup to buy and sell used clothing. It took me like 30 minutes to have a website up and running on Shopify, then I had my journey with this startup for 6 months until I decided I don’t really have the time to continue and I closed it down.
Meanwhile, many people started asking me about how I launched that fast and about the platform, and since then, I became a partner to many well known solutions starting with MailChimp, Shopify & Accept Payments. And I get asked all the time about eCommerce, how to start, and when to start.
Do you have a product?
We get so many people coming with a million questions in their mind about the best way to start, the best way to do marketing, the best way to reach customers and advertise, the best way for everything. That’s good, being very keen on understanding everything before you get started is very important, but make sure you don’t confuse that with not actually doing anything.
Just get started, choose a channel, either it’s facebook, instagram, an online shop, or anything else, display your product and sell it! I know the term is overused but seriously get an MVP (Minimal Viable Product) and start getting customer feedback about everything. Get people to give you the toughest comments about the product and the experience and actively fix things moving forward. But one thing, just move forward.
Online = Images
If you don’t want customers to walk into a physical store of yours to watch your product, and you only want them to do this online, how do you expect them to buy something they don’t see?
Shoot your product, have many images, from the front, the sides, the back, upside down if needed. Proper images are very important and very convincing to the people who want your product. People want to trust that what they are buying is what they actually need. So again, don’t expect to go online sell a tie saying “a slim black tie”, even if this is very descriptive, I want to see the tie before I buy it.
Expect some expenditure!
All of these costs are really minor, you can cover these costs with revenue that doesn’t exceed 1000 EGP a month.
